Information Technology & Human Factors in Health Care
. . . .Thoughtful design saves lives.
Human factors and its relationship to information technology is important for a range of reasons but the most important is that of patient or client safety. While this has been recognised in a range of industries, notably air safety, it is less recognised in the booming industry of health informatics. This site is designed to lead people to what is happening in that field within standards development, research initiatives and any other important developments as they occur. Welcome to ITHF!

Human-Computer Interfacing : New Sources of Clinical Error
- 23 November 2008
- This week I was privileged to present at the 2008 Australian Health and Medical Research Congress on Human-Computer Interfacing : New Sources of Clinical Error. While not a lot of people in the audience my central themes were well recieved. I clarified the depth of complexity that we are facing not just in the Health Informatics applications but also the underlying foundational hardware and systems (operating systems and databases). My central approach is teh we need to work through this complexity and move forward. The only way that I can see is via an international clinical systems quality approach which in due course will be able to investigate adverse incidents or 'near misses' and reinforce the need for greater control of application and interface designs. I will try to write up an article or paper covering most of what I said but that as always is a time sink.
